Emergency room visits linked to energy drink consumption have surged in recent years, according to a report released on Tuesday, as more people combine the popular beverages with alcohol and drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration said hospitalizations in the United States tied to energy drinks have jumped tenfold to 13,114 in 2009 from 1,128 visits in 2005. The most recent year for which data is available is 2009.

The agency, a unit of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said that 44 percent of the visits involved people who had combined the stimulant-rich drinks with alcohol, pharmaceuticals or illicit drugs. The vast majority of the visits were made by males between the ages of 18 and 39, the agency said.

The researchers did not say what symptoms drove the people to go to the ER or what underlying medical conditions they may have had. But they said other studies have indicated that excessive use of the drinks on their own can cause adverse reactions such as arrhythmia, hypertension and dehydration.

“Combining energy drinks with substances of abuse raises the risk of serious, even life-threatening injury, as well as the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors such as driving under the influence,” the researchers said. The report was immediately criticized by a trade group for makers of the energy drinks, which usually contain stimulants like caffeine and guarana as well as other additives that can compound the beverages’ effects .

The fact that nearly half the hospitalizations involved people who had also consumed alcohol or taken illegal substances or pharmaceuticals made “their consumption of energy drinks potentially irrelevant,” the American Beverage Association said. The group also said that most mainstream energy drinks contain just half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffee.

French drugmaker Sanofi said on Saturday that its experimental multiple sclerosis drug Lemtrada worked better than an older drug sold by competitor Merck KGaA at keeping patients free from relapses. New data from a late-stage trial showed that 78 percent of patients treated with Lemtrada remained relapse-free for two years, compared with 59 percent using Rebif, an older multiple sclerosis drug sold by Germany’s Merck.

Lemtrada is a key experimental product at Sanofi’s Genzyme unit. The fortunes of the drug are closely watched by holders of Genzyme Contingent Value Rights certificates issued to shareholders as part of the U.S. company’s takeover deal. CVRs represent an extra fee holders will receive if Lemtrada hits certain targets or when Genzyme meets other milestones.

The commercial potential of the drug, already sold under the brand name Campath as a leukemia treatment, was a key bone of contention between Sanofi and Genzyme during takeover talks. Multiple sclerosis, which affects 2.5 million people worldwide, is a chronic and progressive disease that attacks the central nervous system.

Previously published data from the same late-stage study were mixed. Although Lemtrada was found more effective than Rebif at preventing relapses, it did not prevent the disease from becoming disabling, as it had in earlier trials. The results of the latest late-stage trial showed that side-effects, including respiratory and urinary tract infections, were mild to moderate, Sanofi said.

Serious adverse events were similar between Lemtrada and Rebif, Sanofi said, with 18.4 percent of patients on Lemtrada suffering from side effects that included autoimmune disorders compared to 14.4 percent in patients taking Rebif. The drug’s prospects should become clearer once the results of another late-stage trial are published by year-end. The study is comparing Lemtrada with Rebif in multiple sclerosis patients who have relapsed while on therapy.

Sanofi plans to submit Lemtrada for U.S. and European Union marketing approval in the first quarter of 2012. The drug, if approved, will face competition from Novartis’s Gilenya.

U.S. medical device reviewers said a Cook Medical stent coated with a common cancer-fighting drug was safe and effective for treating clogged arteries in the thighs. Zilver PTX, the first drug-coated stent to treat peripheral arteries, kept arteries free from plaque longer than bare-metal stents, the Food and Drug Administration reviewers said in documents released on Tuesday.

Privately held Cook Medical competes against Boston Scientific and Medtronic, which also make leg stents, in a stent market estimated at $5 billion worldwide. Stents are tiny mesh-like tubes used to prop open clogged arteries. Doctors slip such tubes into arteries after they have been opened with an inflated balloon. The Cook Medical stent is coated with paclitaxel, an anti-cancer drug, to help prevent re-clogging, a common problem with conventional bare-metal stents.

The FDA reviewers said Zilver PTX was better than the control arm in a clinical trial, but the small trial size of only 479 patients meant some safety risks could be hard to trace.

A panel of outside experts is scheduled to consider the Cook Medical device at a meeting on Thursday. The FDA will later make the final decision on whether to approve the stent for sale in the United States. The device was approved for sale in Europe in 2009. The Zilver PTX is meant to treat peripheral arterial disease, which affects about 30 million people annually, Cook said. The disease develops when arteries outside the heart build up cholesterol and scar tissue, causing them to narrow and restrict blood flow.

The most common symptom of the disease is leg pain when walking, but only 33 percent of individuals with clogged peripheral arteries have symptoms, Cook said, meaning patients do not always know they have the disease. Zilver PTX, made of a super-elastic alloy of nickel and titanium, is meant for use in clogged arteries above the knee, which supply blood to the knee joint and muscles in the thigh and calf.

Cook said its Zilver self-expanding stent, which has no drug coating, is already approved by the FDA for treating lesions in arteries in the pelvis. J&J’s Cypher stent, which slowly releases the antirejection drug sirolimus, was the first drug-coated stent on the U.S. market. It was approved by the FDA in 2003. But in June, the company said it would no longer sell its drug-coated heart stents.

Electromagnetic radiation and how it affects our life is a subject very commonly treated by specialists. As we know, everything in the universe is energy. All life forms, including humans are influenced by the radiations that affect vital functions such as growth, health, metabolism, thoughts, emotions and movements.

The human body is composed of ions, minerals and water; is a conductor of energy. Billions of electrical impulses regulate the activity of every living cell in body affecting his good condition and his ability to heal. When we think of electromagnetic radiation, instantly think of the radiation emitted by objects such as lines of tension, X-rays, etc. Invisible electromagnetic radiation are omitted, but they can cause serious brain, nerve, endocrine and reproductive system damages and to each organ from our body. Invisible waves include home and office appliances such as radio, television and microwave radiation, fire alarms, hair dryers, refrigerators, mobile phones and computers are only a few names.

Scientific studies in the last two decades have reported an increased risk of disease associated with electromagnetic radiation. Some examples:

- Microwaves radiation: Proteins are difficult to digest, increases cholesterol, hemoglobin problems, hair loss, muscle problems, memory loss.

- Computer radiation: Increase the risk of abortion, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, loss of energy, increases the number of cancer cells, memory loss, and decreased libido.

- Mobile phones radiation: Insomnia, headaches, memory loss, nausea, difficulty in concentration, respiratory problems, sinusitis, hair loss, eye problems, brain tumors.

Obviously should be avoided foods cooked in microwave and we should eat more fruits and vegetables. Because of electromagnetic radiation, immune system is exhausted and a good idea is to help our body with vitamins, minerals and exercise. Electromagnetic radiations are an invisible killer; they absorb energy from people and animals.

If we use a phone-like most people, then we are wearing a strong negative energy source wherever we go, and keep close to the brain every time we use. It is advisable to avoid long conversations and not keep it to our ear when calling the number. At night when we are sleeping is good to keep him away, about a meter, to not cause sleeping trouble. Is best to avoid keeping the phone in our pocket, close to the heart (especially for cardiacs) and do not use him when is loading.

Mobile phone radiation affects sleep quality. Talking on your mobile phone before bedtime can cause various health problems, according to a new survey. According to this study, cellular radiation emitted can cause insomnia and headaches, and reduce time spent in deep sleep. Lack of enough sleep can cause problems such as depression and then, we are unable to concentrate, and cause personality changes too.

The authors of the study, researchers from the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, said that a person using a mobile phone before bedtime, hardly sleep and get much later in a state of deep sleep – essential for the body, because holds important processes such as cell revitalization and elimination of accumulated fatigue during the day. In adolescents and children, insufficient sleep can cause disruption of attention and decreased school performance. Unfortunately more and more children use mobile phone to chat with friends before going to bed. To avoid the harmful effects of radiation emitted by mobile phones, you will need to use the landline, whenever possible in general and especially at least an hour before bedtime.

Fortunately, new technology can neutralize and harmonize radiation without feeling the negative effects. A “chip” size of a coin or an adhesive film can dramatically reduce the harmful effects of cell phones and other devices.

CommuniGuard Calivita is a protector and harmonizer device, as a self-adhesive film that protects the body from the effects or harmful influence of electromagnetic radiation from various sources. All electronic devices and transmission devices emit electromagnetic waves. Although invisible, electronic smog has, over time, harmful effects on health. Constant exposure to electronic smog can contribute to symptoms such as headaches, nervousness, fatigue, sleep disorders and increased stress can occur even after a disease.

CommuniGuard sticker is designed to help protect us from electromagnetic radiation and high frequency emissions of cellular phones, laptops, intercoms, cordless telephones, televisions, microwave ovens, GPS, etc. CommuniGuard effect is based on the fact that living organisms are influenced not only by active ingredients (nutrients, vitamins, micro-elements, etc.), but by pure energy information indeed.

People invariably want to have more energy, be more healthy, look better, and feel more attractive. Invariably, I get asked by people how do I have more energy? Or how do I look better? Or how can I get over my health problem?

I get asked a variation of that question more than anything else. The problem is I don’t want to say “Change everything you eat and drink.” I think it every time, but I know it would sound flippant to say to people “overhaul your whole lifestyle.” So I had to think what are quick strategies people can do to make a shift in the quality of their life fast? Originally, I broke it down into 41 steps someone could do to go from having no energy, to having explosive energy, or having a crippling health condition to begin to get over that, and be repaired.

The problem being is many people didn’t want to wait to go through these simple steps to experience a revolution in the quality of their life. So, I had to think of something fast. This email is unique in that, I don’t have the space here to go into detail as to the psychology behind why we believe in natural health these things are unhealth, but we will discuss them all seperately in another email.

The 3 biggest allergens in the world, that is, the foods that cause human beings the biggest problems have traditionally been thought by natural therapists in order to be:

1/ Dairy
2/ Wheat
3/ Sugar

Now, before you say “I like sucking off a cow and eating my growth hormone, bacteria, mould, bacteria excrement, glue, experiencing weight gain, crippling hormone problems and so on. Or I like having my small intestine damaged and the delicate hairs in my intestinal system ripped out with from wheat, and being tired every afternoon. Or I enjoyed creating micro-organisms in my system that decompose me and age me rapidly from my sugar.”

The bottom line is I’ll explain that and we’ll go through it all together in another email. But. If you want to make an immediate difference in your life, then do these 2 simple things:

1) Trade in dairy products for any of the following:

Milk:
- Soy Milk
- Rice Milk
- Oat Milk
- Almond Milk
- Hazelnut Milk (tastes similiar to the children’s spread nutella – usually sold in health shops only.)

- Cheese :

- Soy Cheese:
Minichol – Can be brought in the deli in most major supermarkets (don’t confuse this with a cheese called lo-chol)

Butter:
- Olive Oil
- Avacado
- Nuttelex (This is not ideal but a starting point)

2) Go down the health shop and only have bread that is:

Bread:
- Spelt
- Kamut
- Rye (good to a point – but contains gluten)

Rice:
- Brown
- Jasmine
- Basmati

Pasta:
- Buckwheat
- Brown rice
- Spelt

Very simply. A simplified version of the above is to
1) Trade your wheat bread, and get spelt bread from any health shop. The taste is similiar, except one is unheatlhy, and one is healthy.
2) Trade your milk for soy milk.

The fortunate thing is due to consumer demand for healthy products healthy bread tastes fantastic these days, and you have enormous alternatives to the milk you’ve been drinking since birth. Do it just for the sake of looking more attractive. If you’ve heard of someone’s lactose intolerant or gluten intolerant then I promise you: you are too. Do it and notice how much your energy improves, especially in the afternoon. If you had sore or itchy eyes how much they improve, and the mental clarity that comes.

If your children have any sort of respiratory problems then I implore you: stop all dairy.

Physicians are threatening to stop serving nearly a million Puerto Ricans as a result of a dispute between the island’s government and an insurance company over reimbursements for treating poor people.
Gov. Luis Fortuno on Wednesday appealed to the doctors to avoid cutting off patients, saying it would be illegal. In an interview with WAPA, a local TV station, he also said the government would withhold two months of payments to the insurance company unless it settled with doctors, hospitals, laboratories and others.

Just hours after Fortuno spoke, the island’s health secretary announced the government paid $57 million of the $87 million it owed Medical Card System Inc. for June. Secretary Lorenzo Gonzalez initially said the remainder would be paid only when MCS settled its bills with medical providers, but he later said it would be paid in upcoming days.

“The money is and has always been available,” he said. “Our concern has been to address the complaints of providers.”

Physicians say MCS owes them as much as $60 million. They plan to decide soon if they will stop stop seeing Medicaid patients until they get paid, said Dr. Joaquin Vargas, president of the Independent Practice Association, which represents 38 medical groups. “If this payment does not occur, the services will be threatened,” he said. “It is a painful situation for us.”

MCS president Jose Duran said in a statement that the company will start paying providers starting Friday, but he did not specify how much of the pending debt would be paid. The standoff began shortly after the government launched a revamped Medicaid program in October, promising patients extended hours, more access to mental health services and fewer pre-approvals required to see specialists. The program caters to those who make less than $800 a month and to the disabled.

But complaints about delayed payments began to surface in December and have increased in recent months. As a result, the government announced last week it was terminating an $810 million contract with MCS, the largest insurance provider under the revamped program. Hospitals claim MSC owes them $91 million and pharmacies say it owes them $6 million, said Frank Diaz-Gines, executive director of the territorial Health Insurance Administration.

MCS blames the government, saying it is owed nearly $243 million for services it has provided. The government said it owes MCS only $87.5 million for services provided before June, and most of that was for services unrelated to the new Medicaid program.

Diaz-Gines said the government will pay its $15.3 million government debt to MCS for the Medicaid program once MCS improves its services. No problems have been reported with two other smaller health insurance companies that also provide services under the new Medicaid program.

As the standoff continues, legislators are debating a proposal to make the Health Insurance Administration or another government agency the sole payer to medical providers, eliminating involvement by insurance companies. “We wanted to do something different after seeing that health insurance companies were having trouble,” said Sen. Margarita Nolasco, the bill’s co-author. “The doctors were complaining, the hospitals were complaining, the laboratories were complaining.”

The Senate has approved the bill, which is now being debated by the House of Representatives. Nolasco said eliminating the role of health insurance companies might be the solution. “They are a business, and that is legitimate,” she said. “But it cannot be done at the cost of people’s health.”

Fortuno, however, told reporters late Wednesday that he did not support the bill. He said the U.S. government, which provides 30 percent of the program’s budget, would not allow such a change.
